Sony Unveils RX10 V with AI-Powered Subject Recognition and 24-600mm Zoom

Sony has announced the launch of the RX10 V (Model DSC-RX10M5), the fifth-generation model in its acclaimed RX10 series of all-in-one digital cameras, scheduled for release on July 31. Pre-orders will open on July 16.

The camera is equipped with a 24-600mm (25x optical) F2.4-4.0 ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* large-aperture high-magnification zoom lens, making it versatile enough to handle everything from wide-angle landscapes to extreme telephoto wildlife and sports photography. It features a 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS image sensor with approximately 20.1 effective megapixels, paired with the latest BIONZ XR™ image processing engine to deliver high-resolution textures and faithful color reproduction.

Next-Gen Autofocus Driven by an AI Processing Unit

Incorporating a dedicated AI processing unit, the RX10 V introduces advanced “Real-time Recognition AF.” Leveraging deep learning, the system can identify and track a wide range of subjects, including humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes. It also features an “Auto” mode that allows the camera to choose the subject automatically. With pose-estimation technology, the camera can maintain focus on human subjects even if they turn away or have their faces obscured by helmets or sunglasses.

In terms of speed, the camera performs up to 60 AF/AE tracking calculations per second. It supports blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30 fps with AF/AE tracking, ensuring photographers never miss a critical moment. A new “Continuous Shooting Speed Boost” function allows users to change the burst speed mid-shoot.

Advanced 4K 120p Video Capabilities

For videographers, the RX10 V supports 4K 120p video recording, allowing for up to 5x smooth slow-motion capture at 4K resolution. Image stabilization includes an “Active Mode” for steady handheld shooting.

Furthermore, the camera features “S-Cinetone™” for a cinematic look straight out of the camera, alongside “S-Log3” for professional color grading workflows. It also inherits AI-driven features like “Auto Framing,” which crops the frame to keep the subject prominently positioned, and supports importing up to 16 custom user LUTs to monitor the final look while shooting.

Improved Operability and Reliability Rooted in the Alpha Series

Reflecting the design philosophy of Sony’s Alpha mirrorless cameras, the RX10 V boasts an improved grip and button layout. It features a large 0.5-type approx. 3.68 million-dot Quad-VGA OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.0-type 1.62 million-dot tilting LCD screen.

  • Enhanced Battery Life: Transitioning to the high-capacity Z-series NP-FZ100 battery, the camera achieves up to approximately 630 shots per charge—a more than 50% improvement over the predecessor.
  • Connectivity and Durability: Designed with dust and moisture resistance in mind, it includes dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5GHz), a USB Type-C port supporting 4K 30p live streaming, and compatibility with fast SDXC/SDHC UHS-II memory cards.
