Sony Announces Cinema Line FX5 Featuring Stacked CMOS Sensor, Internal X-OCN, and Open Gate Recording
Advanced Imaging Performance with Newly Developed Stacked Sensor
Sony has officially announced the FX5, the latest addition to its acclaimed Cinema Line range. Designed to meet the demanding requirements of cinematographers and solo creators, the FX5 packages high-end cinema capabilities into a highly portable body.
At the core of the FX5 is a newly developed full-frame stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS image sensor paired with the latest BIONZ XR2™ processing engine, which integrates an AI processing unit. The camera delivers over 15 stops of dynamic range when shooting in S-Log3 and features triple base ISO (ISO 800 / 4000 / 12800). Additionally, it introduces a dual gain recording function to the FX series, allowing for exceptionally clean shadow details and smooth tonal transitions.
Internal X-OCN Recording and Open Gate Capability
For the first time in the FX lineup, the FX5 supports 3:2 full-sensor readout (Open Gate recording) when capturing in X-OCN. It allows internal recording of Sony’s 16-bit scene-linear RAW format, X-OCN, eliminating the need for external recorders.
In addition to X-OCN LT, the camera introduces two new codecs—X-OCN C1 and X-OCN C2—which significantly reduce file sizes while maintaining pristine image quality, streamlining post-production workflows. High-frame-rate options include up to 5K 60p, 4K 120p, and Full HD 240p.
Compact Mobility and Professional Ergonomics
The FX5 features a flat-top, cage-free design with multiple mounting threads for direct accessory attachment. It integrates 5-axis in-body optical image stabilization, including Dynamic Active Mode for enhanced stability during handheld shooting.
Operators benefit from a 3.5-type 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor with 2.76 million dots and the “BIG6” home interface inherited from CineAlta flagships. Audio capabilities are also upgraded, supporting up to 96kHz 32-bit float 4-channel recording via the new optional XLR Handle Unit XLR-H2.
