Agriculture Minister Kazuo Yana Apologizes at LDP Panel Following Sharp Rebuke by Lawmaker Suzuki

Published:

At a meeting of the Liberal Democratic Party’s Committee for Promoting the Transformation of Agricultural Structure, newly appointed Agriculture Minister Kazuo Yana faced unexpected criticism from veteran lawmaker Muneo Suzuki, leading to an immediate public apology.

Policy Address Interrupted Over Lack of Accountability

Minister Yana delivered an opening address outlining his policy agenda, focusing on revisions to paddy field management, securing budget allocations for food security, and supporting agricultural producers.

Immediately after Yana concluded his speech, Suzuki intervened. Pointing out that the minister was currently under intense public scrutiny, Suzuki argued that Yana should have addressed his controversies and apologized for causing public concern before presenting policy goals. Suzuki asserted that personal dignity and responsibility were at stake, while also criticizing the meeting chair for failing to address the issue beforehand.

Minister Offers Direct Apology to Lawmakers

Suzuki emphasized that public figures must demonstrate genuine accountability rather than relying solely on policy pledges to win support.

Yana took the floor once again to offer a direct apology to the gathered lawmakers:

  • Yana expressed regret for causing worry and disruption among party colleagues and the public.
  • He attributed the situation to his own “lack of virtue.”
  • He pledged to fulfill his duty of explanation to prevent disruptions to agricultural administration.

Following the remarks, Yana departed the room as the committee resumed its scheduled discussions.
